How Smart Diagnosis Works on LG and Samsung Appliances

LG and Samsung smart appliances watch for problems and send alerts to your phone. See how smart diagnosis works, what an alert means, and where it falls short.

On connected LG and Samsung appliances, the brand's app watches for problems the appliance reports and sends alerts with an error code and troubleshooting steps to your phone. It is useful for catching issues early and for giving a technician a head start, but an alert tells you what the appliance detected, not always which part has failed.

How it works, step by step

  1. The appliance is connected. It joins your Wi-Fi and is registered in the brand's app: LG ThinQ or Samsung SmartThings.
  2. The control board watches its own sensors. Temperatures, water levels, motor behavior and door switches are checked during normal operation, and faults are logged as error codes.
  3. The app monitors the appliance. LG's ThinQ page describes Smart Diagnosis as part of ThinQ Care, which continually monitors and helps catch problems early and troubleshoot them. Samsung's Home Care support page says Home Care monitors devices such as a Family Hub refrigerator or washing machine and notifies you of potential issues.
  4. You get an alert. Samsung says each alert shows the appliance's error code and troubleshooting steps, and appears in your phone's notification panel and in Home Care.
  5. You follow the steps or ask for service. Samsung's page explains that you can request repair service from the alert, or manually from the Life tab under Home Care.
  6. Maintenance reminders come through the same channel. Samsung gives the example of an alert when a refrigerator water filter needs replacing.

LG also documents an older, sound-based version of Smart Diagnosis. In the owner's manual for its WM3488HS washer, you open LG's laundry app or call LG, hold the phone near the Smart Diagnosis logo, and press and hold the Temp button for three seconds while the washer sends about six seconds of tones carrying its diagnostic data. LG says the feature only works with the washer powered on, depends on phone reception and background noise, and assists rather than replaces a service call.

What you'll notice because of it

  • Phone alerts about problems you may not have noticed yet.
  • Error codes in plain view, with suggested steps.
  • Maintenance reminders for filters and cleaning cycles.
  • Usage reports on LG ThinQ Care models, which LG lists alongside Smart Diagnosis.
  • Features that vary by model. LG says ThinQ Care is available on select smart appliances, and Samsung points to its website for the list of compatible products.

Where it can go wrong

An alert with no visible problem

Symptom: a warning arrives, but the appliance seems fine. Some alerts are early warnings, such as a slow drain or a door left ajar. Follow the steps first; if the alert returns, note the code.

No alerts because the appliance is offline

Symptom: the app shows the appliance as disconnected. A new router, a changed Wi-Fi password or a power outage can drop the connection, and monitoring stops until it is restored.

A code that points to a symptom, not a part

Symptom: the same code returns after the suggested fix. Many codes describe what the control detected, like a heater that isn't warming, which can have more than one cause. A technician uses the code as a starting point.

Alerts caused by settings

Symptom: a warning about something that is actually a mode or option, such as a delayed start or a locked panel. Check the settings before assuming a fault.

Getting the most out of it

  • Keep the appliance connected, and reconnect it after router changes or outages.
  • Take a screenshot of any alert with its code and the time it appeared.
  • Act on maintenance reminders; they are the easiest problems to prevent.
  • Check your owner's manual for the diagnosis method your model uses; the button and the app differ from model to model.
  • Share the code when you book service.

Some appliance behavior looks like a fault but is a mode doing its job; what Sabbath mode does on a refrigerator and oven is one example. For alerts that keep returning on LG appliances or Samsung models, our technicians cover the tri-county area, from Fort Lauderdale and Davie to Boca Raton.

Worth knowing: An app alert gives the technician a head start, but the code describes a symptom, so the failed part still needs confirming.
