What a Fast Freeze Setting Does in a Freezer

A fast freeze setting runs the freezer harder for a set period, then returns to normal. See how it works, when to switch it on, and what it can't fix.

A fast freeze setting tells the freezer to run harder for a set period, so a big load of new food drops in temperature faster, and then switches back to your normal setting on its own. It is useful before a large shopping trip or a party, but it cannot make up for a freezer that is failing to cool.

How it works, step by step

  1. You press and hold the button. On Samsung's convertible refrigerators, the Power Freeze button is held for three seconds to turn it on or off, according to Samsung's U.S. support page on those modes.
  2. The freezer works harder. Samsung says Power Freeze increases the fan speed and speeds up the freezing process. On most models, the compressor also runs longer or faster than it would at your normal setting.
  3. It runs for a fixed time. Samsung's Power Freeze keeps food as cold as possible for up to 50 hours.
  4. It returns to normal automatically. When the period ends, the freezer goes back to the temperature it was set to before.

Other brands use names like Express Freeze or Quick Freeze for the same idea. Timing and behavior differ by model, so check your owner's manual.

What you'll notice because of it

  • Louder running. Higher fan speed and longer compressor runs are easier to hear.
  • A colder-than-usual freezer while the mode is on.
  • Frost on new packages as their moisture freezes quickly on the surface.
  • More ice. A colder freezer can help the ice maker cycle a little faster.
  • Higher energy use. Samsung notes that Power Freeze uses additional energy while it is active.

Where it can go wrong

The mode makes no difference

Symptom: the freezer stays warm even with fast freeze on. The mode only pushes a healthy system harder. A stopped evaporator fan, a frosted coil, dirty condenser coils or a sealed-system problem will not be fixed by a button.

The mode never ends

Symptom: the indicator stays lit and the freezer runs extra cold for days. A control fault can leave the mode stuck on.

Fresh food gets too cold

Symptom: items near the fridge's air inlet start to freeze while fast freeze is on. On refrigerators where the fresh-food section gets its air from the freezer, a much colder freezer can push colder air into the fridge.

It hides a warming problem

Symptom: the freezer seems fine only while the mode is running. If you need fast freeze every day to keep food frozen, something in the cooling system needs attention.

Getting the most out of it

  • Turn it on ahead of time. Samsung recommends starting Power Freeze at least 20 hours before adding a large amount of food.
  • Spread new packages out in a single layer at first, so cold air reaches each one, then stack them once they are frozen.
  • Keep vents clear inside the freezer.
  • Turn the mode off when you are done if your model doesn't end it on its own.
  • Use an appliance thermometer to check the freezer's normal temperature, rather than relying on the mode to tell you everything is fine.

Fast freeze also helps the ice maker catch up before a gathering. How a refrigerator ice maker works explains why ice production depends on freezer temperature. If your freezer only stays cold with fast freeze on, book a freezer repair visit.

Worth knowing: Fast freeze speeds up a working freezer; it does not repair one that is losing ground.

A freezer that only keeps up with fast freeze switched on needs a diagnosis. Call ProFix Miami at (786) 723-6874.
