What Sabbath Mode Does on a Refrigerator and Oven

Sabbath mode stops lights, tones and displays from reacting to doors and buttons. See what it changes on fridges and ovens and why it can look like a fault.

Sabbath mode stops a refrigerator or oven from reacting to everyday actions, such as opening a door or pressing a pad, with lights, sounds or display changes, while the appliance keeps cooling or baking. It was designed for people who observe the Sabbath and Jewish holidays, and it is worth understanding even if you never use it, because a fridge or oven left in Sabbath mode by accident can look broken.

How it works, step by step

On a refrigerator:

  1. You turn it on with a press-and-hold. The buttons depend on the brand. Whirlpool's guide to Sabbath mode says its refrigerators use the mode button held for three seconds, while the owner's manual for GE's ZIC30GNHAII built-in refrigerator has you hold the Alarm and plus pads together for 5 seconds until "SAB" appears.
  2. The door stops triggering things. Whirlpool says the doors can be opened and closed without activating interior lights, sounds or other controls. The GE manual says door alarms and lights are disabled and the main temperature displays go dark.
  3. Status lights go out. Whirlpool adds that water filter status lights are disabled.
  4. Settings lock. Whirlpool notes that temperatures cannot be adjusted while the mode is on.
  5. Cooling continues on a schedule. The GE manual says the refrigerator keeps operating and the ice maker keeps running, but fans run at predetermined times and defrost runs on a timer, not in response to door openings.
  6. It stays on until you turn it off with the same press-and-hold.

On an oven:

  1. You choose Sabbath from the bake options. Whirlpool says only Bake can be used in this mode.
  2. Displays and tones go quiet. STAR-K, a kosher certification agency, describes certified ovens as not activating or changing lights, digits, fans, icons, tones or displays during normal use.
  3. The automatic shut-off is bypassed. Many ovens have a safety shut-off after 12 hours of operation, which STAR-K notes is bypassed in Sabbath mode, so the oven can bake for longer.
  4. The light stays as you left it. Whirlpool says the oven light keeps its setting until the mode ends.

What you'll notice because of it

  • A dark fridge when you open the door, and a blank temperature display.
  • Ice still dropping into the bin on models like the GE above, because the ice maker isn't part of the mode.
  • No beeps from the refrigerator or oven, including the door alarm.
  • A control panel that ignores you. Pressing temperature pads does nothing until the mode is turned off.
  • An oven that bakes with a blank or minimal display and gives no preheat tone.
  • An oven that stays on past the usual 12-hour limit.

Where it can go wrong

Turned on by accident

Symptom: the fridge light seems dead, the panel won't respond, and the door alarm never sounds. Cleaning the panel or leaning on the pads can trigger the button combination. Check the manual for the exit sequence before assuming the light or control board has failed.

A door left ajar goes unnoticed

Symptom: warm food and frost near the door after a holiday. With the alarm off, nothing warns you that a door didn't close.

A real fault hidden by the mode

Symptom: the fridge is warm but the display shows nothing useful. Because the display and alarms are suppressed, temperature warnings or error codes may not appear until the mode is off.

An oven mistaken for broken

Symptom: no display or tones while it is heating. If the oven is truly not heating, exit Sabbath mode first, then check whether it heats normally.

Getting the most out of it

  • Learn your model's on and off button sequence from the owner's manual before the holiday.
  • Set the refrigerator and oven temperatures you want before turning the mode on, since they lock.
  • Check that every door is fully closed after each opening.
  • Keep an appliance thermometer in the fridge so you can check temperatures without the display.
  • Treat an oven left on for many hours with care: keep the area clear and know how to turn it off.

The same low-key approach shows up in the oven's proof setting, which runs at very low heat for dough; what proof mode does in an oven covers that. If your fridge still won't light or cool after you've confirmed Sabbath mode is off, book a refrigerator repair visit.

Worth knowing: If a fridge light and alarm stop working at the same moment, check for Sabbath mode before suspecting a failed part.
